Even after adding several pieces this offseason, the Tampa
Bay Rays continue to seek a “bat or two,” general manager Andrew Friedman tells
Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times.
So executive vice president Andrew Friedman said they're still looking for a "bat or two" to add for next season.
So far this offseason the Rays have acquired shortstop Yunel
Escobar, first baseman James Loney and right-hander Roberto Hernandez. Tampa
Bay also acquired top outfield prospect Wil Myers from the Kansas City Royals in
the James Shields, Wade Davis trade.
Smith notes that the Los Angeles Angels would have been an
ideal trade partner before they dealt slugger Kendrys Morales to the Seattle
Mariners for Jason Vargas. LA can now slot Mark Trumbo and Peter Bourjos into
their lineup.
Other potential free agent fits, including Raul Ibanez and
A.J. Pierzynski, have signed with other clubs this offseason.
Following the signing of Cody Ross, the Rays could look to
acquire an outfielder, most likely Jason Kubel, from the Arizona Diamondbacks. Tampa
Bay could also target free agent Lance Berkman, though it’s unclear if he’ll
play in 2013.
