Catcher aren't often the most durable players on the field. They generally don't play a full season, are often platooned, and deal with more nagging injuries than other players. However, A.J. Pierzynski has shown a surprising ability to stay healthy. That may be part of the reason the Texas Rangers are interested in signing the veteran catcher.
According to Gerry Fraley of the Dallas Morning News, the Texas Rangers and Pierzynski are set to meet to discuss whether the 35-year old has a future with the Rangers. Texas lost Mike Napoli to free agency and is looking to replenish its offense as a whole.
Pierzynski suffered a fractured wrist in 2011, but he remained healthy for the 2012 season. He has played in 130 or more games (a lot for a catcher) in five out of the past seven seasons. This past year, he played 135 games and hit .278/.326/.501 with 27 home runs. His power would be amplified by the hitter-friendly dimensions of the Ballpark at Arlington. That may be a selling point the Rangers look to capitalize on.
Fraley also points out that the Pierzynski is a long-time favorite of John Hart. Hart is the Rangers' former GM and is still a special advisor to the team. Texas tried to acquire Pierzynski back in 2005. They will get another chance this offseason.
