The Texas Rangers have taken some hits to their offense this offseason. They have yet to do much to replenish the losses. However, Texas has met with free agent outfielder Cody Ross. Ross could be a short-term solution while the Rangers figure out their long-term plan.
Ross and the Rangers met on Tuesday says Richard Durrett of ESPN Dallas. The details of the meeting are not yet known, but Ross did not leave Texas with a contract.
Ross provided a nice spark for the Boston Red Sox last season. He hit .267/.326/.481 with 22 home runs in 130 games. However, the 130 games-played represented only a small improvement over his 2011 season in which he played in 121 games. Ross has played for six different teams in nine seasons and has a career line of .262/.324/.460. At 31 years old, Ross has likely peaked, but the Rangers can hope for a similar performance to his 2012 season.
Ross suffered a broken foot in May of this past season. He fouled a ball off his left foot and missed about a month. When he returned, Ross' performance was up and down. However, he did not show any lingering effects from the injury.
Texas lost Josh Hamilton, Mike Napoli, and Michael Young so far this offseason to free agency and trades. They were not able to/didn't want to make plays for three of their better players. The team is still stacked with talent, but they could use some outfield help.
