The Philadelphia Phillies have signed left-handed starting
pitcher John Lannan to a one-year contract with a base salary of $2.5 million,
as reported by Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia.

Lannan’s new deal with the Phillies includes up to $2.5
million in additional performance bonuses, which means the left-hander has the
potential to earn $5 million in 2013, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.
The Phillies entered the offseason with a starting five
intact for the 2013 campaign. However, Philadelphia sent Vance Worley and
prospect Trevor May to the Minnesota Twins in order to acquire center fielder
Ben Revere.
The absence of Worley left a void in the Phillies starting
rotation, and it was reported that they were targeting a low-risk,
high-reward-type arm to fill it. With the former Washington Nationals starter
in the fold the Phillies have a projected rotation for 2013 that includes
Lannan, Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels and Kyle Kendrick.
Lannan spent most of last season pitching at the minor
league level and struggled when he did. He was able to post an ERA of 4.13 over
six starts for the Nationals, but overall it was a down year for the
28-year-old.
Over six seasons pitching against National League East clubs
as a member of the Nationals Lannan posted an ERA and WHIP of 4.01 and 1.424
with 4.7 strikeouts and 3.4 walks per nine innings.
