Orioles Rumors: Baltimore Interested in Mariners 1B Justin Smoak

The Baltimore Orioles are interested in Seattle Mariners first baseman Justin Smoak, who is more available following the team’s acquisition of Kendrys Morales, reports Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.

With Kendrys Morales now a Mariner after a gutsy deal with the division rival Angels for lefthander Jason Vargas, Smoak could be moved. According to a major league source, the Orioles are said to have some interest.

The Orioles were tied to Smoak earlier this offseason, and now that the Mariners have a viable replacement in Morales the former top prospect could be moved. Baltimore is said to like Smoak’s swing and could be open to giving the 26-year-old a shot at first base.

After tearing through the minor leagues, Smoak has only hit .223/.306/.377 over parts of three seasons at the major league level.

There are few other first basemen available, and the Orioles are hesitant to surrender the draft pick it would take to acquire the market’s top option, free agent Adam LaRoche.
