The New York Mets may have lost to players in the span of one day. Truthfully, Mike Pelfrey was not technically a Met any more. New York non-tendered him earlier this offseason. But still, in a way, the team lost two pitchers in one day. R.A. Dickey is reportedly going to be a member of the Toronto Blue Jays as long as they can work an extension in as part of the deal, and Pelfrey is signing with the Minnesota Twins.
According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, Pelfrey has agreed to a $4 million contract with the Twins. The contract will include up to $1.5 million additional in incentives. Such a contract is not surprising considering Pelfrey is coming off a significant injury.
Pelfrey underwent Tommy John surgery in April of this year. He is expect to return in April or May. Tommy John surgery usually requires 12-18 months of recovery. Pelfrey and the Twins are hoping and leaning toward the 12-month mark. At the time of the surgery, Pelfrey actually had the choice of going a non-surgical (blood spinning) route, but he chose the more proven treatment in surgery.
The Mets got two solid years out of Pelfrey, and he had a good start going to the 2012 season before his injury. His other four seasons, though, were mediocre at best. In all, Pelfrey has a 4.36 ERA in seven seasons, all with the Mets. This past season, Pelfrey made three starts and had a 2.29 ERA.
The Mets will be looking to re-stock their rotation now after losing two of their starters. Pelfrey had been lost in April giving the Mets time to adjust, but now they can't even work to bring him back. The Twins have been active this offseason and snatched Pelfrey up as part of their own rebuilding process.
