The New York Mets should still have their closer ready by spring training.  However, Frank Francisco had to undergo surgery on his elbow to remove bone spurs.  The 33-year old is signed through next season and is expected to be the Mets' Opening Day closer.

According to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, Francisco had surgery on his right elbow, but the Mets expect him to be fine for next season.

Francisco was 1-3 with a 5.53 ERA in 2012.  He still managed to save 23 games, but he struggled through the season.  Francisco battled injury in 2012 as well.  He suffered an oblique strain that landed him on the disabled list in August.  The injury may have played a role in his numbers, but last season was certainly surprising.

In his career, Francisco has 72 saves and a 3.92 ERA.  He did not start saving games until the 2009 season.   He has spent eight years in the Majors and has played for three different teams.  Francisco came up with the Texas Rangers and spent the majority of his time there.  He has since played for the Toronto Blue Jays and the Mets.
