The dismantling of the Texas Rangers bullpen continues. Koji Uehara has signed with the Boston Red Sox, meaning the Rangers will have lost or will likely lose, Joe Nathan, Mike Adams, and Uehara at minimum. That's a big blow to any bullpen, but the signing is favorable for the Red Sox.
Gordon Edes of ESPN Boston says Uehara and the Red Sox have agreed to a one-year deal pending a physical. The exact amount of the contract has not been revealed, but it will likely be less than the $4 million Uehara made in 2012 considering the aging reliever missed about a month due to injury.
Uehara was sidelined this past season with a strained right lat muscle. He was placed on 15-day disabled list back in June, but he ultimately missed closer to a month's worth of work. The injury did not seem to have any long-term, lingering affects, but the Red Sox will probably be cautious with him considering his age and the injury.
Uehara, 37, came over from a successful career in Japan in 2009. He spent time in Baltimore before being traded to the Rangers. In both stops, Uehara was successful. He found more success in Texas though. In his career, Uehara has posted a 2.89 ERA. In his two-plus seasons in Texas, he posted a 2.50 ERA.
The Red Sox have the chance to build an impressive bullpen. They may need another piece in case Andrew Bailey is not 100 percent healthy, but the team has done a great job of turning their entire roster around quickly. Including the bullpen.
