The Texas Rangers' GM Jon Daniels seems to be the "driving force" behind the potential four-team blockbuster that was first rumored yesterday. It would appear, the Rangers, the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Cleveland Indians, and the Seattle Mariners are the four teams involved in talks. A deal like this would be a difficult one to pull off, but because of Seattle's interest in Josh Hamilton and Texas' interest in Justin Upton, it's not unrealistic to think the deal eventually gets done.
No one is quite sure exactly what the proposals are between the four teams, but we know this. The Diamondbacks want to get rid of Upton and they need a shortstop. The Indians have Asdrubal Cabrera who could be available, and the Rangers have Elvis Andrus. The Rangers want Justin Upton, which means it's likely that Hamilton signs elsewhere. The Mariners want Hamilton bad, but he is a free agent, so the Rangers don't have much leverage using him in these talks. Got all that? Good. Now, let's get to the update.
According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, the Mariners may be the team holding up a possible deal. He says they want Derek Holland if a deal does get done, but they also want to sign Josh Hamilton. The Mariners have been the team not quite willing to move the deal forward, and sources have told Rosenthal that it's unlikely that this blockbuster gets pulled off. However, with a trade like this, the details are always evolving. Just the day before yesterday, the Kansas City Royals and the Tampa Bay Rays were rumored to be linked to this blockbuster.
On the injury front, there would be at least two concerns in this trade, and neither actually seems to concern the teams involved. Justin Upton battled a thumb injury all season long and suffered other injuries throughout the course of the season. Josh Hamilton has been known for his injuries, and dealt with a strange vision issue and sinus infection in 2012. The number of games either of these players will be able to play is a toss up, but the teams involved in this rumor don't seem to mind.
