Dodgers Could Go After Kyle Lohse

The Los Angeles Dodgers have no problem spending money.  That's what a new ownership group and a huge television contract will do for a team.  They just signed Zack Greinke to the largest contract a right-handed pitcher has ever signed.  They traded for Carl Crawford, Josh Beckett, and Adrian Gonzalez in July.  They traded for Hanley Ramirez just before that.  And they're still not done.  It look like the Dodgers are interested in another starter and that starter could be Kyle Lohse.

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports tweeted the possibility that the Dodgers could target another pitcher.

Sanchez was traded to the Detroit Tigers this past season as the Miami Marlins initiated their fire sale.  He is commanding a lot of interest.  Lohse is the more surprising target.  He stepped up this past year as Adam Wainwright struggled at times and as Chris Carpenter recovered from injury.

Lohse posted the lowest ERA of his career this past season.  He was the best pitcher on the St. Louis Cardinals staff.  And he's a free agent now.  However, Lohse also comes with injury concerns.  In two out of the past four seasons, Lohse has failed to hit the 30 start mark.  He hit the disabled list in 2010 with a rare condition in his arm that required surgery.  He made only 18 starts that season.  In 2009, he made only 22 starts.

If the injury concerns are behind him, Lohse could be a huge sleeper pickup for any team that signs him.  He was 16-3 with a 2.86 ERA in 2012.  He posted a 3.39 ERA in 2011.  At 34 years old, Lohse still has some innings left in him, and could be an asset to the Dodgers' staff.

Lohse made $11.875 million in 2012.  With his performance this past season, he will likely earn a raise.  The Dodgers could afford to pay that raise.  Expect Lohse to get somewhere around $12-14 million/year when he does sign.
