Derek Lowe Wants to be a Starter

Derek Lowe has cared out a decent career for himself as a Major League starter. Despite finishing last season in the New York Yankees bullpen, he wants to continue his run in a starting rotation - even if that means turning down offers from clubs pursuing him as a potential reliever.

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe says Lowe has indicated as least five teams have shown interest in him as a reliever. He has turned them all down. While the 39-year old made 21 starts for the Cleveland Indians before being shipped to New York, the Yankees felt he was better suited in the pen.

Lowe was hurt in spring training this past season, but aside from that he remained healthy. The Indians simply felt they were better off getting some trade value out of him rather than letting him walk via free agency this offseason. The Yankees saw him as the type of guy who could help anchor their bullpen.

Lowe was 9-11 with a 5.11 ERA last season. It was a rough year, but he showed some promise with New York. Lowe 3.04 ERA in 17 relief appearances.
