Now that Stephen Drew has signed with the Boston Red Sox,
the Oakland Athletics are expected to explore trade options to fill their void
at shortstop this winter, reports Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Industry source tells me #Athletics likely to explore trade options for SS now Drew off market. #RedSox offer was quite a bit more than A's.

Slusser notes that the Red Sox $9.5 million agreement with
Drew was “quite a bit more” than the A’s offered the shortstop. Oakland
acquired Drew last summer from the Arizona Diamondbacks and had expressed
interest in re-signing him.
At this point there is not much in the way of free agent
options remaining at shortstop, so Oakland is expected to attempt to acquire
one via trade. There are several potential targets out there depending on what
they’re looking for.
The Houston Astros are willing to listen on Jed Lowrie,
though they will reportedly need to be overwhelmed to move him. Asdrubal
Cabrera has been one of several Cleveland Indians players to see his name
tossed around the rumor mill this winter. Another potential option could be Dee
Gordon of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
