The New York Yankees are more likely to pursue bargain free
agents this winter rather than spending big on high-profile players such as
Josh Hamilton and Zack Greinke, reports Joel Sherman of The New York Post.
The biggest spenders in history aren’t exactly cutting baseball coupons as the General Managers Meetings open. But they are again more likely to pursue bargains than big-money bonanzas such as Josh Hamilton and Zack Greinke.
The Yankees front office reportedly has orders from upstairs
stating the team can’t exceed the luxury tax threshold in future seasons. This
will limit what they can do with contracts moving forward, though Sherman says
New York could extend one nine-figure deal this winter.
While this wouldn’t be for a free agent such as Hamilton or
Greinke, it would go toward locking up one of their own; second baseman
Robinson Cano. Still, Sherman characterized even a Cano extension as “unlikely,”
so it could be a quiet offseason in the Bronx.
