Napoli has garnered significant interest already this
offseason, and the Yankees American League East rival, the Boston Red Sox, are
also reportedly checking in on the free agent.
Russell Martin, the Yankees’ starting catcher over the past
two seasons, is also a free agent. While New York reportedly has interest in
re-signing Martin, they have explored other opportunities, such as Napoli.
After an extremely impressive 2011 season in which he posted
an OPS of 1.046 over 369 at-bats for the Rangers, Napoli came back down to
earth a bit last year. The 31-year-old hit .227/.343/.469 with nine doubles,
two triples and 24 home runs over 352 at-bats.
