Jeff Keppinger may be playing for his seventh team in nine years if things work out with the New York Yankees. Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports says the Yankees are showing renewed interest in Keppinger. The utility infielder could provide some depth for the aging Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez.
Keppinger played for the Tampa Bay Rays last season. He appeared in 118 games and hit .325/.367/.439. In his career, Keppinger has hit .288/.337/.396. He has been more than decent in his eight Major League seasons.
Last season, Alex Rodriguez went down to a broken hand. He never really got going when he was healthy though. The Yankees turned to Eric Chavez part of the time, but Keppinger could add another option. Then there's Jeter. Jeter had one of the best seasons of his career in 2012. However, he fractured his ankle in the postseason and no one is quite sure how he will be when he returns. Keppinger could fill in at shortstop as well.
The Yankees fell apart without Jeter in the postseason and Rodriguez continue to struggle in the playoffs. They need to go in a new direction, and while Keppinger probably isn't that direction, he should give them a boost offensively when he's in.
