So far this offseason the Minnesota Twins have reached out
to several free agent starting pitchers, including Brandon McCarthy, Anibal
Sanchez, Joe Blanton, Ryan Dempster, Brett Myers, Brandon Webb and Scott Baker,
reports Darren Wolfson of 1500 ESPN.
More realistic targets are free agent pitchers Joe Blanton and Ryan Dempster, whom the Twins have contacted, or another free agent pitcher, Brett Myers.
The Twins enter the season with only one starting pitcher,
left-hander Scott Diamond, penciled into their 2013 rotation. For this reason
they were expected to pursue multiple arms this winter through free agency and
trade.
Minnesota isn’t known as a team that will spend big via free
agency, and someone close to Sanchez, who’s reportedly seeking a $90 million
contract, wasn’t sure that the Twins would pay what it takes to acquire top
talent.
This would appear to have them in running for second-tier
starters such as Blanton, Dempster, Myers and Baker. The Twins may also look to
bargains or pitchers coming off injuries, such as Webb, in order to fill out
their rotation.
