Russell Martin Rumors: Yankees, Rangers, Mariners, Pirates Interested in Free Agent

While the New York Yankees remain the favorite to sign free agent catcher Russell Martin, he’s also drawing interest from the Texas Rangers, Seattle Mariners and Pittsburgh Pirates, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

The free-agent catcher also is drawing significant interest from the Texas Rangers, Seattle Mariners and Pittsburgh Pirates, according to major-league sources.

Entering the offseason many predicted that Martin would re-sign with the Yankees. He experienced success in New York over the past two seasons, and the team doesn’t have a clear-cut answer to replace Martin behind the plate.

However, the Rangers are the team Rosenthal considers most likely to pose a threat to the Yankees when it comes to signing Martin. Texas could “pressure the Yankees” by making Martin a considerable multi-year offer.

Given the fact that veteran A.J. Pierzynski is the only other prominent catcher on the open market this winter, Martin figures to draw significant interest.
