Royals Injury News: Joakim Soria May be on His Way Out

After the Kansas City Royals declined Joakim Soria's $8 million option, the former closer became a free agent.  This, of course, does not mean the Royals had no intentions of bringing him back.  It simply meant that after a year lost to Tommy John surgery, they did not feel $8 million was a sound investment.  However, now that Soria is a free agent, he is testing the waters and may soon be on his way to a new team.

Soria, who served as the Royals closer since 2007, is open to being a set-up man.  Specifically, says Andrew Marchand of ESPN New York, Soria is open to being the set-up man to Mariano Rivera in New York.  Marchand reported yesterday that Soria wants to be a closer, but he would work under his idol, Rivera, is the Yankees showed interest.  And the Yankees should show interest.

If there is one thing that's been made readily apparent in Major League Baseball, it's that a team can never have too much pitching.  The Yankees could have a devastating one-two punch if they signed Soria - assuming Soria can return to form.  Keep in mind, Soria is just 28 years old.  He has a lot of good years ahead of him presumably.

Soria's agent spoke on the young righty's behalf:

"If the Yankees call, we will be all ears," Soria's agent, Oscar Suarez, said by phone Monday. "If there is a fit, Joakim would be elated to work with Mo. He would close everywhere except there."
The question the Yankees will certainly be interested in is how much Soria expects to be paid.  As a set-up man, and as a player who is unproven after surgery, he cannot expect the $8 million he would have been due had the Royals picked up his option.  Instead, Soria must be willing to take a pay cut.  He made $6 million last season while he rehabbed.  A team may be far more interested in him if he were to take $5 million for a season.
