Red Sox Rumors: Boston Shopping Jarrod Saltalamacchia

The Boston Red Sox signed veteran catcher David Ross to a two-year contract, leading some to speculate that the team’s starting backstop Jarrod Saltalamacchia could be traded this offseason. However, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports the Red Sox had been shopping Saltalamacchia “for weeks” prior to the signing of Ross.

The Red Sox entered the offseason with two potential starting catchers on their roster in Saltalamacchia and Ryan Lavarnway. While unproven, Boston reportedly has a strong belief in Lavarnway’s ability. Ross has spent most of his career as a backup, and while he isn’t expected to be a starter with the Red Sox, the team has said he will serve more than a reserve role.

For his part, Saltalamacchia hasn’t been a slouch at the plate during his time with the Red Sox, hitting .222/.288/.454 with 17 doubles and 25 home runs last season. Despite being 27 years old and holding his own at the plate, Saltalamacchia is expected by many to be the Red Sox catcher dealt this winter given the team’s commitment to Lavarnway and the signing of Ross.
