The Boston Red Sox have some level of interest in a pair of
shortstops that are thought to be available, free agent Stephen Drew and
Asdrubal Cabrera of the Cleveland Indians, reports Nick Cafardo of the Boston
Globe.
The Red Sox have been tied to several shortstops this
offseason, as it appears they are not confident crowing prospect Jose Iglesias
as their starting shortstop entering 2013. While his glove is major
league-ready, he didn’t hit in the bigs (.391 OPS) or minors (.631 OPS) last
season.
Cafardo speculates that the Indians may be willing to listen
to trade offers for Cabrera now that they have former Red Sox shortstop Mike
Aviles on their roster. The 27-year-old hit .270/.338/.423 with 35 doubles and
16 home runs last season and owns a career OPS of .757.
Boston is said to have “some interest” in Drew, who played
better after joining the Oakland Athletics last season. Cafardo notes that the
29-year-old is coveted for his “good skill set” at a prime position.
