While the Tampa Bay Rays are willing to listen to trade
offers for several of their starting pitchers, they would need to be “overwhelmed”
to trade either right-hander James Shields or left-hander David Price, reports
Jayson Stark of ESPN.
"Oh, they're open to it," said an official of one team that checked in with the Rays. "They're open to being overwhelmed."
Stark compared the chances of the Rays trading Shields or
Price to the odds of the tight-budgeted club signing top free agent starter
Zack Greinke.
When teams ask about Shields’ availability, they are
reportedly told they’d need to offer something in the neighborhood of the five-player
package the Rays received from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for Matt Garza. Stark
adds that it might take “double that” to pry Price from Tampa Bay.
All things considered, right-hander Jeremy Hellickson
remains “a much more likely candidate to call a moving van,” according to
Stark. Still, even that’s “no lock.”
