The dismantling of the Miami Marlins may not be complete. At least that's the thought among many fans and members of the media. They have already dumped all the high-payroll players. Now, they may try to dump the player who could eventually cost them a lot. That includes Giancarlo Stanton.
According Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, interest in Stanton is reaching a fever pitch. He says the Philadelphia Phillies, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Baltimore Orioles, and Chicago Cubs have called on Stanton.
Cafardo also says it would be difficult to pull of a deal because commissioner Bud Selig is watching the Marlins closely. However, it seems Selig has no interest in setting precedent or blocking trades. At this point, trading Stanton would only serve to make Stanton happier. He went to Twitter after the Marlins fire sale and expressed his displeasure. The fans in Miami have already lost their team, it seems unlikely that Stanton alone would be enough to draw fans to the park. Selig won't block a deal if the Marlins decide to trade Stanton.
Giancarlo Stanton is one of the best young players in the game. And to top things off, he is cost-controlled (thus the reason Miami hasn't already dumped him). Stanton is still pre-arbitration eligible, meaning he will make at or near league minimum salary.
Stanton was selected to the All-Star Game this past season, but he was unable to play because of surgery on his right knee. Stanton had arthroscopic surgery in his knee to clean up some lingering damage. The injury kept him out of the Home Run Derby and the All-Star Game, but it didn't keep him from dominating while he was on the field. Stanton hit .290/.361/.608 this past season with 37 home runs.
