The Detroit Tigers, New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox are
among the teams that have expressed interested in free agent shortstop Stephen
Drew, reports Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com.
The Tigers, Red Sox and Yankees are among teams to have interest in free-agent shortstop Stephen Drew.
Heyman adds that the St. Louis Cardinals, Tampa Bay Rays and
Drew’s former club, the Oakland Athletics, are all teams that could also be
interested in the shortstop.
Heyman notes that the Yankees are a strange addition to the
list given the presence of future Hall of Fame shortstop Derek Jeter. While
Jeter was injured during the playoffs last season, general manager Brian
Cashman has said he expects him to be playing regularly in 2013.
Rather than bring Drew on as a regular shortstop, the
Yankees would be interested in him in a “super sub role,” according to Heyman.
The Red Sox may not believe prospect Jose Iglesias is ready
to take on a starting role, while the Tigers could become more interested in
Drew if they trade current shortstop Jhonny Peralta.
