Free agent outfielder Josh Hamilton figured to be an
expensive acquisition this winter, but according to “someone who knows these
things” the slugger’s asking price is seven years and $175 million, reports
John Perrotto of Baseball Prospectus.

There is no denying Hamilton’s talent. When healthy and on
the field he is arguably the best hitter in the game. Just check out that MVP
season of his in 2010, 1.044 OPS over 518 at-bats for the Texas Rangers.
However, Hamilton’s issue throughout his career has been exactly
that, staying on the field. The outfielder has been hampered by injuries which
limit his playing time and production.
Off-the-field issues are another area for concern, as
Hamilton has also struggled with dependency issues throughout his life. These blemishes
have Hamilton’s detractors saying they wouldn’t go beyond a three year commitment
for him despite his immense talent and impressive track record.
Given his abilities, reported asking price, and murky
market, Hamilton should be one of the more intriguing free agent cases we’ve
seen in some time.
