Josh Hamilton Rumors: Free Agent No Longer on Phillies’ List

Earlier this week it was reported that the Philadelphia Phillies considered free agent slugger Josh Hamilton as a “backup option” in their pursuit of outfielders. However, Hamilton is no longer on the team’s list, according to Jayson Stark of ESPN.

Agents who have spoken with the Phillies say that despite their pursuit of both a center fielder and right fielder this winter, one option who apparently is no longer on their list is Josh Hamilton.

For his part, general manager Ruben Amaro hasn’t conceded that his team can’t take on another large contract or make another large signing. He’s said that the team hasn’t been given a “real budget,” and while he knows the money he has to use isn’t unlimited he says “each situation is unique, in and of itself.”

For this reason the Phillies could sit on the sidelines and watch how the market for Hamilton plays out over the winter. If he ends up commanding the seven years and $175 million he reportedly covets the Phillies, as well as many other teams, will back out. But if Hamilton can be had for a shorter-term deal at a higher annual salary he may become an option for Philadelphia.
