Blake Wood missed the entire 2012 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He underwent the surgery in May and will likely not be available to pitch again until the middle of the 2013 season. But that did not deter the Cleveland Indians. They picked Wood up after the Kansas City Royals waived him. Yet, that wasn't the only player with elbow issues to be impacted by moves by the Indians over the weekend.
Carlos Carrasco, who also missed the entire 2012 season due to Tommy John surgery, was activated from the 60-day disabled list. The Indians had no choice but to activate players from the DL or waive them. In Carrasco's case, he should be able to pitch in 2013, so activating him made sense.
According to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Indians claimed Wood to help round out their 40-man roster. They are currently two players short of 40 after Wood's acquisition and Carrasco's activation over the weekend.
Wood was drafted by the Royals in 2006. He spent two seasons with Kansas City and posted a 4.30 ERA in 106 appearances. Wood had a good year in 2011, but he wasn't able to continue that on in 2012 due to the elbow issue. In 2011, Wood had a 3.75 ERA.
Carrasco has pitched three seasons for the Indians, and he started 33 games over that time. He has a career 4.93 ERA. While he has not been great in the starting rotation, he is expected to be healthy enough to compete for a starting job this spring.
