The Arizona Diamondbacks continues to send mixed signals on
the availability of outfielder Justin Upton, and some wonder if the club will
instead trade veteran Jason Kubel, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
Others wonder if the D-Backs eventually might trade left fielder Jason Kubel instead of Upton, even though they would receive a lesser return.
Even after dealing Chris Young, the Diamondbacks have outfield
depth. Beyond their projected starting three of Upton, Kubel and Gerardo Parra,
the club also has several outfield prospects, including Adam Eaton, waiting in
the wings.
For this reason Arizona is a candidate to trade an
outfielder this winter, but the question remains which player it will be. The
Diamondbacks would receive lesser return for Kubel, who is five years older and
not as talented as Upton. However, the 30-year-old isn’t ancient, and he is
more affordable than Upton.
Last season for the Diamondbacks Kubel hit .253/.327/506
with 30 doubles and 30 home runs. He owns a career line of .268/.334/.467 over
eight seasons in the majors.
