McCarthy, who was among the league's top starters when healthy, also has drawn immediate interest; numerous teams, including the Cubs, White Sox and Blue Jays, are seeking starting pitching.

McCarthy spent the 2012 season with the Oakland Athletics. When he was healthy, the 29-year-old was extremely effective. However, the right-hander struggled to remain on the field, as he was sidelined twice throughout the season due to a shoulder issue.

After finally overcoming his lingering arm problem, McCarthy was hit in the head by a line drive. It turned into a potentially life-threatening situation, and the right-hander wouldn’t return for Oakland.

While he’s expected to be full-go by the time spring training rolls around, McCarthy has proven an injury risk. Still, he’s been solid over the past two seasons in Oakland, posting an ERA and WHIP 3.29 and 1.179 over 43 starts.
