Now that the Toronto Blue Jays have filled their middle
infield need by signing free agent Maicer Izturis, the team is left to focus on
the outfield and its starting rotation, which has brought high profile names
such as Anibal Sanchez and Justin Upton into question. Are either a realistic
fit in Toronto?
While the Blue Jays recognize their need in left field, they
are viewing that vacancy with a wait-and-see approach, according to Shi Davidi
of Sportsnet. Meanwhile, Toronto is being “a little more aggressive” in terms
of its starting rotation.
Izturis’ contract with the Blue Jays (three-years, $9
million) is the most total money current general manager Alex Anthopoulos has
spent on a free agent. However, Toronto has said it could “accommodate” the six
years and $90 million right-hander Anibal Sanchez is seeking.
While Sanchez could be a free agent target this winter, don’t expect the Blue Jays to pursue available Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Justin
Upton to fill their void in left.
Toronto has always been more of a player through trade than
free agency under Anthopoulos, and Davidi believes that the additional of
backup catcher Bobby Wilson could be a precursor to a possible J.P. Arencibia
trade. The Blue Jays could use the backstop to acquire a starting pitcher or
corner outfielder.
