It was well known that the Angels were trying to trade Haren. They didn’t want to exercise his 2013 option, but they also didn’t want to allow the talented righty to walk and receive nothing. They were able to pull off a similar trade involving Ervin Santana earlier in the week, and Haren himself said he expected to be dealt prior to the weekend.

Los Angeles talked with several teams, including the Boston Red Sox according to reports, but they appeared to have a deal in place with the Cubs last night. It would have sent talented but erratic right-hander Carlos Marmol to Los Angeles in exchange for Haren.

Outlets reported that a deal was agreed upon, but the teams failed to officially announce it. It later came out the Cubs pulled their offer from the table, and the Angels were ultimately unable to find a taker for Haren. The right-hander can now hit the open market and be free to sign with whichever club he chooses.
