Adam LaRoche played in 154 games for the Washington Nationals in 2012. It was the most games he's ever played in one season in his career. And it's been a long career. LaRoche battled through injuries 2011 and only played in 43 games, so 2012 was a breath of fresh air. So much so that LaRoche is looking for more of a long-term deal.
According to Bill Ladson of MLB.com, LaRoche is talking with the Nationals about a new contract. The veteran first baseman is looking for a three-year deal, something the Nats may not be willing to do. Ladson says negotiations are going slowly, but LaRoche's top priority is re-signing with Washington.
LaRoche had a big season in 2012. He hit .271/.343/.510 with 33 home runs. He finished sixth in NL MVP voting, won a silver slugger, and picked up a Gold Glove. LaRoche has spent the last two seasons with Washington. He made $8 million in 2012, but will be due a lot more in his next contract.
The Nationals made a qualifying offer of $13.3 million to LaRoche already. He has since rejected the offer, and if he signs with another team the Nationals will get draft pick compensation. If LaRoche does move on, the Nationals have a contingency in place. Michael Morse can move back to first base and the Nationals can continue their pursuit of either Michael Bourn or B.J. Upton. Of course, it's hard to see 33 home runs walk out the door.
