The New York Yankees should target St. Louis Cardinals
outfielder Carlos Beltran this offseason, says Joel Sherman of The New York
Post.
The Yankees should at least inquire if the Cardinals would be willing to move Beltran’s $13 million 2013 salary.
The Yankees will have a need for outfielders this winter, as
Nick Swisher and Ichiro Suzuki are headed for free agency. Suzuki could return,
but Swisher isn’t expected back, leaving a large hole in right field.
Sherman hasn’t heard that the Cardinals will make Beltran
available this winter. However, he thinks St. Louis could potentially be
interested in trading high on Beltran before he gives way to another knee
injury.
Sherman thinks the Yankees could offer the Cardinals a
package in the neighborhood of Joba Chamberlain and second baseman David Adams
while also picking up a majority of Beltran’s remaining contract. He then says
New York could use the veteran slugger in the outfield while saving his knees
by giving him starts at designated hitter.

Why would the Cardinals need Joba Chamberlain? We have one of the best young pitching staffs in MLB. And who and the hello is David Adams. Cano is the only player we would be interested in trading for. The Yanks can use David Adams at second base if he's so great. Please...
ReplyDeleteI can say I thought the same thing when I saw the initial report. It sounds like Sherman thinks the Yankees eating payroll would be the most enticing part of the deal, but STL isn't exactly a small-market team. Seems to be more of a pipe dream than anything.
DeleteI'm not sure what te Cards would get out of it, but I see why the Yankees want Beltran. They have an old, injured outfield. And the entire team can't hit in the postseason. Beltran could solve that.
DeleteThe Yankees are not taking on initial salries. They are cutting payroll. They don't want an outfielder with bad knees. Don't know what Sherman is smoking here.
ReplyDeleteThe Yankees are cutting patrol to avoid luxury tax. They're not going to suddenly be operating on a shoestring budget. If they wanted Beltran and thought he could help in the postseason specifically, it would make sense. I just can't see the Cardinals doing this deal.
