Despite the postseason struggles, the New York Yankees have picked up the options on Robinson Cano and Curtis Granderson. The combined cost for 2013 of these options is $30 million. The Yankees will likely work toward a contract extension for Cano during the 2013 season. As for Granderson, the extension was based largely on his power, but he is seeing an eye specialist because of the struggles that were magnified during the postseason.
According to David Waldstein of the New York Times, both moves were expected by the Yankees and each player was due $15 million if their option was picked up. Waldstein said Granderson's future with the Yankees is not nearly as clear as Cano's. Granderson strikes out far too often and does not get on base enough. However, he has shown a knack for hitting home runs.
As reported after the Yankees were swept out of the American League Championship Series, Granderson is going to see an eye specialist because of concerns that vision is affecting his ability to make solid contact and causes him to strikeout more than he normally would. Depending on the outcome of these visits to the eye specialist, the Yankees may look at an extension for Granderson, but his contract is certainly not a priority.
Granderson hit just .232/.319/.492 in the regular season, but he clubbed 43 home runs. This was his second-straight season with more than 40 home runs. It seems he has benefitted from playing at the new Yankee Stadium. At home this season, Granderson hit 26 of his home runs.
Cano will likely be the Yankees' main priority this coming season. The second baseman is still just 30 years old and finally seems to be showing signs of being a consistent star. He hit .313/.379/.550 this season. His career batting average is now at .308.
